I was very lucky to illustrate Hels Martin’s review of Anna Calvi‘s album for Amelia’s Magazine read it in full here, beautiful. Anna’s music, subjects and words are all about “intimacy, passion and loneliness” and I wanted to reflect that in the illustration. My favourite song from her self titled album is ‘Love won’t be leaving’, a tragic love letter so I started playing around with hand lettering in red:

I scanned it in:

And incorporated the lyrics into the faded and distressed collage I created digitally:

What do you think? A bit different from my usual work, maybe, but I think it fits with the subject and it’s still very much ‘me’. I love hand lettering!

A couple of weeks ago I got a really exciting email from SuperSweet asking me to illustrate something for them. We’re still working on it (it’s launching next month yay!) in the meantime I made a quick illo for this article ‘Has Disney cartoon aged well?’ by Poonperm Paitayawat about the Disney 50 Season at the BFI and the 3D vs ‘vintage’ Disney debate. Have a read online:

This is the very first rough I sent, I wanted to feature Ursula from the Little Mermaid in the centre of the composition coming out as a big creature and have the other characters gather around her:

We agreed to add more characters and make the colours more vibrant. I had to add Cruella De Vil, why is it that villains are always so impeccably dressed? Are all stylish people secretly evil? Mmm… anyway, this is the finished piece:

Thank you SuperSweet!

I’m happy with the outcome considering Disney is not my usual subject. I really enjoyed working with the bright colours and researching all these characters I had completely forgotten about. I think a visit to the BFI is in order!

Is it really only January? Hope 2011 is treating you well, I have a feeling it will be a grand year.

First piece of the year for Amelia’s Magazine! A collage to illustrate an Interview with Victoria Geary and Rebecca Goddard of ethical fashion label Pretty Rubbish by the great Hels Martin, it’s a very inspiring article, available online here.

And just next week, on the 28th, it’s party time at Amelia’s as everyone will be celebrating the Book Launch of Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration at 1-2-3 Bethnal Green Rd, I can’t wait. It’s a beautiful book not just in terms of design but also as a statement on ethical fashion and independent publishing.

Oh, student life! It’s been a hectic few weeks of little sleep and lots of work, getting everything ready for assessments, tutorials and presentations. All over now, I’m officially on holidays! Still busy with some very exciting projects for the new year I will definitely make time for good food & drinks, good times with my dearest and nearest and maybe a bit of travelling if I get lucky.

I wanted to share this illustration of my all time hero Wanda Jackson that I did a while ago for an interview with designer Cléo Ferin-Mercury for Amelia’s Magazine. Cléo, who also studied at LCC and graduated from BA Surface Design a couple of years ago, designed a beautiful range of silk scarves inspired by her 6 female icons. You can read the full article online here.

I also spent a lot of time at the V&A this term: researching the treasures at the National Art Library there, visiting the amazing Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes exhibition (remind me to post my sketches, I was blown away by Picasso’s work for the ballet), attending many Friday lates and lots of general wandering around. There is something special about the V&A that makes every visit a bit life changing.

On my last visit I discovered a gem of another kind. Conveniently on the way from the tube station the V&A have recently opened a lovely book shop/cafe: the Reading Rooms and while not as charming as the museum’s own tea rooms it’s definitely cheaper and not as busy. Perfect to have a cup of tea or some wine after a visit to the museum and be tempted by the beautiful books, it’s so friendly in there. I love the way they display their second hand books:

I finally got round to scanning these solar plate prints I made for my end of year project at uni as they were still in LCC for the summer shows, it’s probably my favourite printmaking technique, alas, extremely labour-intensive. They Illustrate my (very) limited edition book called ‘Tattoo‘ loosely based on the 1941 traditional spanish song made famous by the one and only Concha Piquer. It tells the story of a girl that falls in love with a sailor with a tattoo of his ex’s name… read it before I spoil it for you but, I’ll warn you now, it’s heartbreak fest for everyone involved.

The collages combine found photos and images of the period with traditional Tattoo inspired drawings, some of the collages are made out of well over a hundred images.

Handprinted A5 Chine-Collé 1 Ink Solar plates

Tattoo

It was a foreign ship that brought him to me

I found him that dark and cold summers eve

As the lighthouse sent the vessels its gentle kiss

Tattoo

All Charms and hair as light as Ale

Proud he stood with his chest tattooed

His voice an aching nightingale

Tattoo

Soon after one bottle he started to reveal

The story of the name written on his skin

For the deep inked wound would never ever heal

Tattoo

“We once had love but she soon forgot

and forever I shall try to win her back

the only one I truly loved now long gone”

Tattoo

One grey morn in that same ship he disappeared

Having stolen something from between my lips

The one thing I asked him for, a lovers kiss

Tattoo

From then on I have been looking from port to port

Is he dead or alive is all I need to know

The only one I truly loved now long gone

Tattoo

Since that kiss I can’t eat, breathe or sleep

Look at his name now inked deep in my skin

If you find him let him know I am dying for him

Many thanks to Gloria and Veronica for the help and endless patience with the text.
