Next time someone asks me ‘what is Book Art’ I’ll refer them to this diagram by Clive Phillpot. I went to see him talk at the Whitechapel Gallery as part of a discussion with Antony Hudek of Occasional Papers about his upcoming book ‘Booktrek: Selected Essays on Artists’ Books since 1972′. He gave the audience very interesting (controversial?) definitions of all this apple, lemon and…

A bit of a cheeky play with On the road by Jack Kerouac. The novel was first published in 1957, the same year Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir were asked to re-design the whole road sign system in the UK. They created a new typeface for it: ‘Transport’ and improved the way we travel and live through simple, effective design.

Llibreria Catalonia, 1932 – El mon es governat pels llibres (The world is ruled by books)  Always a sad day when a(nother) bookshop closes. I spent many hours, pesetas and euros at Llibreria Catalonia growing up, one of my parents’ favourite bookshops in central Barcelona open since 1929. I heard the manager on the radio earlier – he said a McDonald’s restaurant is opening in…

Here’s something I’d been working on for a book cover commission, these two didn’t make it past the concept rough stage but it was fun to step out of my comfort zone and try a different approach relying less on typography. The story is a mystery thriller set in the late 1950s packed with action, spies, rebels and… tropical fish.
